Frequently Asked Questions

Every number on the clock face is worth 5 minutes. Count round from the 12 in fives: 1 is 5 minutes, 2 is 10 minutes, 3 is 15 minutes and so on. Up to 30 minutes we say past (minute hand on 4 = twenty past). After 30 minutes we count backwards to the next hour and say to (minute hand on 10 = ten to).
Roman numeral clocks use I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII for 1 to 12. Some old clocks use IIII instead of IV. Read the hands exactly as you would on any other clock.
Quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour. Quarter past 3 is written as 3:15. The minute hand points to the 3 on the clock face.
Quarter to means 15 minutes before the next hour. Quarter to 6 is written as 5:45 because it is 15 minutes before 6:00. The minute hand points to the 9 on the clock face.
There are 120 minutes in 2 hours. One hour = 60 minutes. Two hours = 60 + 60 = 120 minutes.
The hop method means jumping to friendly stops instead of subtracting awkward numbers. Example: from 3:40 to 5:15. Hop 1: 3:40 to 4:00 = 20 min. Hop 2: 4:00 to 5:00 = 60 min. Hop 3: 5:00 to 5:15 = 15 min. Total = 20 + 60 + 15 = 95 minutes.
12:00 PM is midday (noon). 12:00 AM is midnight. This confuses many people. PM starts at noon and goes to midnight. AM starts at midnight and goes to noon.
A timetable shows times in rows and columns. Find your starting point in one column and read across the row to find the time at your destination. Calculate the difference between the two times to find the journey length.
