Free Calendar and Dates Worksheet
Clocks are only half of time. This worksheet covers the calendar half: how many days sit in each month, why February changes length, how leap years actually work, how many weeks fit into a year, and what a decade, a century and a millennium mean. There is a leap year checker you can type any year into, a colour-coded month chart, and fourteen questions with hints and answers. The leap year rule catches out adults as often as children, because it is not simply "every four years": century years like 1900 are skipped unless they divide by 400, which is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. Frequently Asked Questions about the Calendar
How many days are in each month? +
January 31, February 28 (29 in a leap year), March 31, April 30, May 31, June 30, July 31, August 31, September 30, October 31, November 30, December 31.
How many days are in February? +
February has 28 days in a normal year and 29 days in a leap year.
What is a leap year and how do you work one out? +
A leap year has 366 days, with an extra day added to the end of February. The rule has three steps: if the year divides exactly by 4 it is a leap year; but if it also divides by 100 it is not; unless it also divides by 400, in which case it is. That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
Why do leap years exist at all? +
The Earth takes about 365 and a quarter days to travel once around the Sun, not exactly 365. Those spare quarter-days add up to roughly one full day every four years, so an extra day is added to keep the calendar lined up with the seasons.
How many weeks are in a year? +
There are 52 full weeks in a year plus one extra day, because 52 x 7 = 364. In a leap year there are two extra days.
How many years are in a decade, century and millennium? +
A decade is 10 years, a century is 100 years and a millennium is 1000 years.
Which months have 30 days? +
April, June, September and November each have 30 days. Everything else has 31, apart from February.
What is the knuckle trick for remembering month lengths? +
Make a fist. Start at the knuckle of your index finger and say January, then the dip beside it is February, the next knuckle is March, and carry on. Months landing on a raised knuckle have 31 days; months landing in a dip have 30 days (February excepted). When you run out of knuckles at July, start again from the first knuckle with August.
