Read the Passage

World War Two lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved more nations than any other conflict in history. It began when Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later, and what followed would become the most devastating war the world had ever seen.

The war was fought on multiple fronts across Europe, North Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The Allied forces, which included Britain, France, the Soviet Union and the United States, faced the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan. Millions of soldiers fought in conditions of extreme hardship, from the frozen Eastern Front to the scorching deserts of North Africa.

On the home front, life changed dramatically for ordinary people. In Britain, children were evacuated from cities to the countryside to protect them from German bombing raids known as the Blitz. Families were issued ration books to manage shortages of food and clothing, and women took on roles in factories and the armed forces that had previously been held only by men.

The turning point of the war came in June 1944, when Allied forces launched the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy in northern France. This enormous military operation involved nearly 160,000 troops crossing the English Channel in a single day. The success of D-Day opened the way for the liberation of Western Europe.

The war in Europe ended on 8th May 1945 with Germany's surrender, a day celebrated as VE Day, Victory in Europe. The war in the Pacific continued until Japan surrendered in August 1945, following the devastating use of atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The conflict left an estimated 70 to 85 million people dead and changed the world forever.
