If nothing unusual is at the end of the word this rule almost always works.

Rule 2: When -s is Not Enough
Nouns ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z get -es
Have you ever tried to say boxs? Go on, try it out loud right now.
🗣 Try saying these out loud:
boxsNearly impossible! Your mouth does not like it.
watchsThe -ch and -s clash. Your tongue trips up.
bushsThe -sh and -s merge into a mess.
boxesMuch easier! The -es adds a clear syllable.
watchesNatural and smooth. The extra syllable helps.
bushesClear and easy. That is why we use -es!
Why -es? English does not like two hissing or hushing sounds crashing together. When a noun ends in -s, -sh, -ch, -x or -z we add -es instead of just -s. It creates a new syllable that makes the word easy to say.
