What is a Noun? | The Name Gate

Look around you right now. You can see a table, a chair, a window. Outside there might be a tree, a road, a school. Above you is a sky. Each of these is a thing that has a name.

A noun is simply a naming word. It is the word we use to name a person, a place, an animal, or a thing.

All four words above are nouns. Can you see what they have in common? They all name something. That is the one rule of nouns: if it names something, it is a noun.

Nouns name four kinds of things. Let us look at each one carefully.

Notice that happiness is also a noun. You cannot touch it, but you can feel it. Even ideas and feelings can be nouns because they have names too.
