Reading Passage

Read the passage carefully. You may look back at it at any time.

1Robots are machines that can be programmed to carry out tasks, often without a person controlling every single movement. A typical robot has three main parts: sensors, which allow it to gather information about its surroundings; a processor, which acts like a tiny brain to make decisions; and actuators, which are the motors and parts that allow the robot to move. Robots come in many shapes and sizes, from huge mechanical arms in car factories to small robots no bigger than a coin used inside the human body for medical procedures.

2People sometimes confuse robots with artificial intelligence, but they are not the same thing. A robot is a physical machine, something you can touch and see, that uses sensors and motors to move and act in the real world. Artificial intelligence, often shortened to AI, is the part of a computer system that allows it to learn, recognise patterns and make decisions, rather like how a human brain works. A robot can have AI built into it, but AI does not need a robot body at all. The voice assistant on a smartphone, for example, uses artificial intelligence without being a robot.

3Robots are already used in many parts of daily life, often without people even realising it. In car factories, robotic arms weld and assemble parts with incredible speed and precision, working twenty-four hours a day without becoming tired. In hospitals, surgical robots help doctors perform extremely delicate operations with steadier and more precise movements than a human hand alone could manage. In warehouses, robots sort and move thousands of packages every day, helping goods reach customers more quickly. Even some homes now have robotic vacuum cleaners that map out a room and clean it automatically.

4Space exploration has also been transformed by robotic technology. Since humans cannot easily survive on other planets, scientists send robots called rovers to explore distant worlds instead. NASA's Perseverance rover has been exploring the surface of Mars since 2021, drilling into rock, collecting samples and sending back detailed images and data. These rovers can survive extreme temperatures, dust storms and radiation that would be far too dangerous for human astronauts. Without robots, much of what we now know about Mars and other planets would remain a complete mystery.

5Looking ahead, technology is likely to keep changing at a rapid pace. Some scientists predict that robots will take on even more complex tasks, working alongside humans rather than simply replacing them. Others warn that society must think carefully about how robots and AI are used, particularly regarding jobs, privacy and safety. What seems certain is that robots and artificial intelligence will continue to play an increasingly important role in how people live, work and explore the world around them in the years to come.
